The Great South West Rocks NSW

South west rocks in New South Wales is surrounded by tidal rivers that feed the areas oyster leases, and with an abundant amount of birdlife, fishing spots galore, and the fabulous and majestic flow of this place one can’t help but feel the creation of serenity that allows you to relax and unwind.

The area boasts some of the most magnificent mangroves I’ve ever seen and is able to float through in a boat as we fish near oyster beds and see the fish beneath the surface of the water along with dolphins, and some turtles were breathtaking.

Just the sheer amount of enjoyment that fills your lungs as you get the freshest of fresh air coming towards you words can’t explain just how enjoyable the experience of being on this tidal River was.

A little kayaking to get the party started… Mr 8 & 9 headed off to see where to catch some fish. They caught 3 large brim and a few smalls all were released back to the river.

We spent 7 days traveling along the river and driving into Port Macquarie daily for the kid’s Distance Education muster at the school where I was able to not only see the wonderful sights of the rivers but also some of the local places and sights along the way.

One of my highlights was actually seeing a swan’s nest for the first time in many years as the drought had forced so many from their watery homes and yet here two were happily nested in the tidal section along the side of the road leading into Port Macquarie.

Sea Eagles, a breeding pair of brolgas a marabu, and various other water birds were prolific along with the river systems and mangroves in the area where some of the local fruit bats were there for the tea tree and mangrove flowerings.

Fishing in the area, despite the water clarity, was still good although at the present time we were advised not to keep the fish due to the flood waters that flowed into the system making the water a little bit like weak coffee.

That being said the fish were biting beautifully, from the smallest to largest of Brim, the young mullets were running we bagged a couple of mulloway and snapper and giant trevally along the way.

I had to be sure of my information here as I don’t recognise the fish by breed but my husband and our friend were very clear as to what each and everyone was and I had to make sure that they were happy with the information that I just put in.

The above pictures where taken on a mobile at dusk so aren’t the best quality, but the kids needed to have a few photos of what they caught and a phone was all I had.

Our whole family enjoyed and is looking forward to our next trip to South West Rocks where we intend to go deeper into the fishing and exploration of the area that we have only just scratched the surface of.

The end of August, when we are due to visit again, heralds the start of the warmer weather and this means hiking and photos of the old jail in the area that I failed to get this time.

South West Rocks are definitely a place that needs a week or two to explore deeply and experience the richness of wildlife, fishing, food, beaches, and history it is a place that allows you to fully immerse yourself in.

The Organic Hippy Family would like to give the thumbs up to all the tourists out there that love adventure, fishing, camping, and hiking.

South West Rocks is undoubtedly an 8/5 star destination.
