Flooded out of our home with a surprise campout….

A trip is as amazing and crazy as the weather, yet what happens when the weather changes and everything you had planned doesn’t go to plan.

You make the most of the weather and have fun anyway…

Travelling with kids mean you get to change things up and not be as linear as you would if you where travelling in a group or as just adults.

You get to have a view of the world through the eyes of your children.

This is just what happened to us as we were driving to what we thought was going to be our destination.

Boundary falls rest and picnic area.

We had planned to head into the Gibraltar Range national park for a hike to Mulligans hut. This hike was 19km trek that we where going to take a few nights campout to do.

Weather was coming in so instead of the hike we decided to head to town and grab Stuarts ute from the mechanic after a new engine had to be installed. ( cars, you want adventure not expenses right?)..

We had checked the weather and knew that we where at a high risk of sprinkling rain the entire time.

This was fine and just another string in the adventure bow.

What we didn’t know was that the rain would turn torrential and just keep being so the entire time we where out and about.

Best laid plans all changed and we headed to see boundary fall in the epic rains that where falling.

The above pictures are of the falls in Normal weather and the flooding rains that we got to experience on this trip.

Okay, so by now we realised that we where going to be camping out because there was NO WAY that we where going to be able to get back home and where going to spend the night in the car.

So we took our time and decided to do the 400 meter boundary falls hike AGAIN… this hike is said to be 30 minutes, but when your kids have been stuck in the car for the last few hours are energetic and needing a release.

It only took ten minutes to run down and back twice and I got to tell you the second time running up those very steep stairs I felt it. Think the three sisters stairs at the blue mountains but on a MUCH smaller scale.

We jumped back in the car and headed towards home, only 50km drive to the turn off and down the big hill when we saw what we already knew was going to be the case.

The Diehard creek was raging and it was now dark, so there was NO WAY we where crossing that in the dark

Camping up and handing my car over to the four kids they all very quickly passed out (yep, I had left over pizza from coming through town) and sleeping safely I jumped into Stuart’s ute for our camp.

Hmm, this was a lot easier in my 20’s than now, or so I remember.

Stuart walked the 4km down in the dark to see if the creek had reduced during the nigh, not once but twice and by 4am we both sort of fell asleep.

Morning came and the creek was still moving to fast so we just hung out near it for another hour watching it slowly recede before we jumped in the cars to cross. (the above pictures show the 10 minutes before crossing).

Now that we where safely on the other side we just had to get home.

Three causeways, three bridges and we would be there…

Lucky for us they where all low enough to cross, although by the time we got to the last one we realised we would have been camping on the other side last night because it went over as well and she is bigger and badder than the causeway we decided we wouldn’t cross.

We got home and bed never looked so good. Grabbing a few coffees and a soft pillow, a movie for the kids after warm showers and breakfast we where ready for an easy, relaxed day.

This all said everyone chattered like monkey’s wondering when we could all do it again and the kids had a blast camping in the car.

Kids are great and the best camp buddies a person could have. Their lives are full of wonderment, adventure and excitement that it becomes infectious and all you want to do is enjoy those smiles and fun times with them.

Enjoy whatever your planning with your kids this weekend and make the most of whatever nature throws your way…

Happy camping..
