A homeschooler’s life isn’t one of getting up, going to school coming home, and playing on the internet until bed.
A homeschooler’s life is filled with learning from sun up to sun down.
It is one that every aspect of life is educational and nothing is off limits or off the cards.
Our four children ranging from years 2-6 have only three subjects that are considered “book-work” and compulsory in our home.
These are…
- Math – Every day they MUST complete, depending on grade level, a column to two pages.
- Reading – another NON-NEGOTIABLE subject, this can be a non-fiction or fiction book and is self-picked, depending on age and ability expectations are set on each child.
- Writing – This is something a school teacher actually told me that I should have them do daily. The teacher had homeschooled her own children out west on a sheep property and impressed on me the importance of having them write something daily… Since then, they have had a writing book where they learn cursive writing and also write stories, shopping lists, you name it it is written.
These are our daily subjects and they aren’t up for discussion on the “do I have to” side of things.
As for everything else, these four kids could be playing, which is a massive part of childhood development.
They could be helping Dad with bees, gardening with me, cooking in the kitchen, watching a documentary, building, horse riding, looking after stock, or training dogs…
EVERYTHING is educational and part of their development.
Lately, while their brothers are heading out bush to camp with their father and work bees the girls have been learning all about essential oils.
This is part of science, chemistry, and housekeeping along with understanding and comprehension.
The girls are 12 and 7 and have been learning how different oils can be used to be a chemical-free bug deterrent, a Low-Tox cleaning agent in the home, and also a healthy living product for general well-being.
This means they grab the Young Living Oils or Doterra oils and learn which blends work together, which can make a person light sensitive, which blend to become potent cleaners, and what can be diffused for better sleep, destressing, and relaxing at the end of the day.
Each and everything that you do in your life can become a lesson in many of the subjects that are taught in schools today and many more that aren’t taught anymore.
Life skill on how to use the internet is important, but so is money management, sustainable living, food production, building, and communication outside of the internet-based society we live in.
Homeschoolers use technology…
A lot of people think that a homeschooler isn’t allowed to use technology….
This isn’t true, however, we are probably a little more aware of what our children are doing with technology than the average parent, and this is because we are with our children ALL THE TIME…
Our children use various forms of camera equipment, pads, and computers, they can use them if they wish.
They do however choose to head outdoors and mostly leave this type of thing for rainy days when they can’t be outdoors.
They make movies, and videos, and are learning a lot about various forms of photography and many other aspects of the digital world.
No, they don’t have social media, they do things the old-school way of picking up a phone and calling or just catching up…
Social activities for homeschoolers are abundant and anyone who thinks homeschooled children aren’t social doesn’t really understand homeschooling very well.
Homeschooled children are far better socialized than those at schools because they are with people who want to be with each other, if they don’t want to socialize they just don’t go.
They also tend to be more supportive of each other and really try to help each other succeed.
Homeschooling is what your family makes of it, not society, not the neighbors, not the education dept, but your family.
One of the best pieces of advice I was ever given was..
Homeschooling MUST fit into your life, NOT your life into it. If you try to fit your life into homeschooling you will always feel like you are failing.
A fellow, long term homeschooling parent.
This was and still is the best advice I have EVER received outside a teacher telling me “YOU NEED TO MAKE THE DECISION”
Those words actually jolted me into reality as NO ONE, but myself and my husband could make this decision.
That was the day I stepped out of distance education and into homeschooling proper.
A decision that I haven’t regretted and only wished I did years earlier.
