I started “yoga” but why & when… just a “Earthlings tale”

So many reasons people have for starting a yogic journey and so many people have asked mine.

Today, I have decided to answer this question because it isn’t like everyone else’s it is one that happened many years ago.

My journey started after seeing a news article on either the then show 60 minutes or A current Affairs.

I couldn’t tell you which show it was as I was young.

In the 90s so between the ages of 12-15 years, I watched the show as was the custom in our home EVERY night and saw a story about Tibetan monks.

This story enthralled me, and if you new me back then you would know I was generally staring blankly at the TV for the customary news hour that I had to sit through, not watching or listening just doing as I was told.

Well, the story got me in, it was in Tibet at the monastery, and it was about “monks levitating”, you read right levitating….

After watching this ancient monk levitate from the ground I was activated and heard the word yoga spoken in this along with the Shalin masters…

My journey had started, and just like that I spent endless hours sitting cross-legged on the floor, bed, in the garden saying “I can float” , not succeeding but giving everything my teen mind could throw at it to try and get there…

Over time I ran into like-minded adults that I could listen to and look upon and being surrounded as we where by the “orange people” walking up and down the streets playing the drums daily I was drawn further and further into a world of mystery that I just longed to explore.

Over the years, I learned from some Shalin masters in the Newcastle area, the Orange people, and some mentors including a visiting Native American Indian that shared his spiritual knowledge with me.

I have NEVER left Australian soil, so can’t say I traveled to far lands in search of teaching, nor can say that I had health, spiritual or harmonizing ideas of the yoga journey.

All I knew back then was if I can float, I’m in.

Now, I have studied yoga through a wonderful school, been given a spiritual name by the monks in India and have taught over the years while practicing in the mildest of forms while just being me.

The road has given me a peace of mind and whenever I stray and find that the world is seeping in causing restrictions of my soul I head back to the one thing that has been a constant in my life since my earliset years and that is simply “YOGA”

Those that thought this would be a fascinating tail of travel, adventure, finding myself after losing myself I am sorry, however for me, this journey came about in a time of life that direction was needed, direction and guidance was sort and that service has stayed with me all this time.

No, I still can’t “float” but have found peace in the knowledge that I am to scattered to get there.

Whatever the reason for someone starting on a yoga journey isn’t something that needs to be shared, it is great to hear, but it is personal and for this I sulute everyone that tried and has a go at that something whatever it is to help them find peace of spirit…

Enjoy what ever journey you are on, you already know if it is the right one for you…..
