Off we go, down the dirt-road and off the beaten track once again and this time to an EPIC fishing whole….. or was it?
Here it is the waterhole of every fishing families dreams, deep, shady spots the perfect weather and the family.
Everything looks good and we quickly get the kids out of the car, Stuart and the boys grab the shovel and and head to the bank to find some worms.
Me, well, I unload the fishing gear and head toward the bank to scope out my spot for the day.
Okay, so the video above was our first with the drone and adding them into a movie so that we could create something of our trip (should I give up my day job and become a videographer????)
The fish we are chasing are eel tailed catfish, eastern cod and maybe some bass if we are lucky.
The weather is beautiful slightly overcast with deep heat soaking sun shining through as we start the fishing prep.

The boys have been super excited about getting enough worms to get a feed for dinner that they spent only 10 minutes filling their tray and where ready to throw a line in.
Worms caught it off to the rivers edge to get days tuition on how to properly attach your hook, spinner and sinker to your line and the appropriate amount of leader to have for the type of fish.
So, you can properly tell by the wording above that I am defiantly NO fishing expert, I put my bait on wrong, still get in trouble for doing the wrong knot on the line and, well none of that matters cause I still catch fish..
HAHA, I can feel the fisherman that are reading this cringing and I will expect your emails with the correct wording in the next hour…
Did you know that I get more bites from people correcting my wording on fishing than I do fishing… but I am still lucky enough to have great fishing karma… go figure hey.

Back to the boys and Stuart teaching them how to do the rigging on their lines.
So Stuart taught them about leaving the tails to long on the line after rigging the hook (he also nearly chocked on the bit of line he chewed off ), boys got dad to help them with the first worm and off they went trowing the lines in with every muscle twitching in eagarness.
Meanwhile Stuart and I sat down beside the river chatting away as the sun was setting, you know that hubby and wifey stuff that you gab about.
Well, we thought a kid landed in the water with the amount of noise that was coming from that side of the bank.
Nope….

It was Rubin and the first little catfish of the day. Disappointment was all over his face as his brother reeled in a big turtle and he realised that these to where defiantly not dinner material.
Throwing back his baby catfish he re-rigged his line and headed back to his fishing spot. Yes, his a boy so he decided to try and make the fish grab his hook by throwing rocks into the water…
Not sure that worked for him, so setting his line he headed off with his brother to play with the turtle that he had caught.

Roger by now has caught six turtles and decided that he too would set his line and go play with them.
The two boys scampering off over the rocks making a rock circle put the 7 turtles in the ring to have a turtle race.
They where having a blast and enjoying the sport immensely. (I can hear the gasps from peoples disapproval as they hear animals and sport in the same sentence.
The boys released the turtles one by one back in the river at the end and watched them swim away.
By the time they where being released they all had names, do you want to know them all?

I have of cause left the boasting till last, I caught the big catfish… ME, ME, ME…. I out-fished my three boys…. not that I am blowing my own trumpet or anything (maybe just a bit).
This beacutiful eel tailed catfish didn’t mind that I didn’t put the bait on beautifully or that I was just chilling under the trees.
She jumped on the line and came back to shore for ME…
Okay enough boasting, the boys and Stuart have walked away so I can’t rub it in any more.

The catfish you can see above is a lighter colour than the usual ones we catch.
This may be because the water in this river is forever moving or that it gets flushed regularly whenever the mountainous areas above get plenty of rain.
The usual colour of the ones we catch are a deep brown…
We released this one back instead of eating it, let’s face it, one catfish, 4 people hmm not enough to go around so we will meet again another day.
When our family goes fishing we have a bag that we made out of shade cloth. This bag is where we put fish we catch into it until we are ready to eat or release.
If we don’t catch enough for the whole family to enjoy they get released back into the river (unless carp) so they can grow and be fished (by ME) again…
We find this is a great way to work with nature as we only take what we can eat and if not enough is provided we always have a plan B.
Just to answer the original question….. yes this watering hole was EPIC
